Collaborative project for the development of a series of on-site demonstrators of cybersecurity solutions, services or processes in entities within the healthcare-assistance services sector, so that they can experience firsthand and in a real environment the benefits of using the cybersecurity measures best suited to their particular circumstances.
This action is carried out within the framework of the 2023 call for grants aimed at improving business competitiveness through support for Innovative Business Groupings (AAEEII) of the Regional Ministry of Economy and Finance of the Junta de Castilla y León, co-financed with ERDF funds, contributing to the objective of "ACHIEVING A SMART AND COMPETITIVE EUROPE"

The project "Design and development of a comprehensive e-Health tool to assist in the diagnosis and severity assessment of diabetic retinopathy" has been co-financed by the ERDF, Thematic Objective 2, which aims to enhance the use and quality of, and access to, information and communication technologies.

The overall objective of the project is to design and develop a comprehensive e-Health tool to assist in the diagnosis and severity assessment of diabetic retinopathy (DR) based on the processing of retinographs (eye fundus images). This tool would make it possible to:

  • Reduce diagnosis time and waiting lists.
  • Reduce the workload of medical staff specialised in retina care.
  • Improve care for diabetic patients.
  • Reduce the costs associated with the traditional diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy.
  • Prioritise medical referral in at-risk cases among diabetic patients.

It is currently known that it is possible to significantly reduce new cases of blindness caused by DR if the at-risk forms of the disease are reviewed and treated in time. However, given the growing incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM), manual screening of the entire diabetic population is not feasible.

This project starts from the hypothesis that the use of new technologies applied to healthcare can offer benefits in the clinical setting and in DR screening scenarios.

Therefore, our research proposal seeks to answer the following research question: is it possible to obtain tools for the early diagnosis and screening of the diabetic population through automatic processing of retinographs?
